CHAPTER 19
How many people can say that they turned 29 at the bottom of the world? Not too many I’d imagine, but Kacey is one of the lucky few. Kacey’s birthday came up on the calendar only a mere two weeks before our departure from the Pole, and as such, there was a lot of celebrating going on for both of these reasons. Her big day started out with a surprise party in the dishpit, followed later that evening with a more relaxed (i.e. alcohol was involved) party in the library- complete with a specially designed chocolate heart attack birthday cake, made with love by our good friend in the kitchen, Cathy the chef.
We opened presents from home when we got to our jamesway, and Kacey was elated by all the beautiful things she received from such seemingly faraway friends and family- there is nothing like a thoughtful gift and a nice note to make you feel homesick! The next night the celebrating continued at one of the South Pole’s best traditions: Open Mic Night- where everyone from the station manager Bill, to the SPT scientist Eddie, to our dishpit comrade Sidney, got up and let their musical talents shine through. We of course, just sat and enjoyed the show, not wanting to subject the crowd to Kacey’s tone-deaf wailing and my fumbling attempts at picking out a tune on the guitar, lest we get booed off stage and sent home early.
