CHAPTER 27
Even though the South Pole community as a whole was pretty tight knit, people definitely tended to connect more with their direct work group or department. For us, like it or not, the Galley staff became our family at the Pole. They are who we spent most of our waking hours with, and inevitably formed our closest friendships with. It wasn’t always sunshine and lollypops in the dishpit, indeed there were many a long day filled with boredom or frustration or thoughts of quitting- we were washing dishes for 10hrs non-stop after all- but these friends, our galley family, kept us grounded when we needed it and picked us up when we were down. For the most part we just had a lot of fun, and that’s what I remember when I look back at our time there. The following photos are just a random collection from our days in the dishpit…
