Dimotiki Agora

CHAPTER 26

We decided to spend the following morning with a walk through the Athens Dimotiki Agora, the public fish and meat market. Markets are always a favorite of ours, mostly because they are usually filled with real life locals, doing their real life shopping, and despite often being mentioned as sights to see in tourist guides, are rarely full of tourists. There is no better way to get an up close and unbiased view of a culture than seeing what they eat, in its raw form, unmolested by cliché presentations of mediocre chefs at the thousand and one run-of-the-mill restaurants you are likely to blindly stumble into on trips such as these.

The Athens market didn’t disappoint. It was bloody, and gory, and authentic- from goats heads, to sharks heads, it had it all- with an overwhelming pungent odor to match! The butchers were swinging giant cleavers, while the fishmongers yelled out in a staccato chant the prices for the catch of the day.
