The Capital of the Dutch

CHAPTER 3

We had stopped over in Iceland because the cheapest flights to Europe were offered by Iceland Air, and the four day layover came at no additional cost. Likewise, the cheapest arrival city in Europe was Amsterdam, and even with the added flight on a local European airline from Amsterdam to Madrid, where we had really been trying to get to the whole time, the total price for our transatlantic crossing was hundreds of dollars cheaper than any other option. Time, for once in our lives, was not a scarce commodity, thus, not only could we afford, but we relished our circuitous route to the Old World, including all of the layovers.

Amsterdam is one of those cities that you can go to once, and come away with the feeling that you have lived there your entire life, and go there a hundred times and still be struck by the novelty and freshness of it all. So it was with us. I don’t know if it’s the seamless melding of city and ocean, or the profusion of bicycles, or the culture of leisurely imbibing in agreeable beverages at any hour of the day, but there is something about the city that will make you seriously consider selling the farm, buying a houseboat, and living tied up to the wall of some humble Amsterdam canal, bobbing up and down in quite contentment for the rest of your days.
