A Tour of Amsterdam

CHAPTER 4

Well, our tour started off on foot- first visiting the Coster Diamond Museum- where we had to make a rather heavy financial decision between investing in a very beautiful and very discounted diamond ring, which, when returning home might fetch a handsome profit (if we were ever inclined to sell), or saving our money and continuing on our trip abroad. In the end the trip won, thank goodness, but some of us still opine for that multi-carat masterpiece…

Next was a diamond museum of a different sort: a million sparkling crystals of CO2 atop a golden pint of Heineken’s best. I can’t say that Heineken is my favorite beer in the world, but a free tour and two free drafts go a long way to winning a spot in my sudsy heart.

Finally, it was time to don our “hoed van Amsterdam”, and rent some bikes. We took to the twisting cobbled streets like a breakaway from the peloton in the Tour de France. Along the canals, over the bridges, through the parks, we went everywhere- and how refreshing it was to be somewhere where two wheels ruled the road, and lumbering four wheeled machinations were treated as proverbial red-headed step children.
